Kalpadruma

Asha founded Kalpadruma in 2017 to explore connections between Arabic, Turkish, Indian, Contemporary Classical and Jazz musics. To date, the group has performed at a number of high-profile venues such as the London Jazz Festival, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and the Union Chapel and have collaborated with the likes of the South Asian Yourh Orchestra and the Orchestra of Syrian Musicians.

The group’s debut album Onwards was launched at the Spice of Life on 23rd June 2022. Writing for Jazz in Europe, Isabel Marquez described it as “a musical tapestry”

The unorthodox do-dectet line-up (string quartet, trumpet, saxophone, bass clarinet, flute, and rhythm section goes with the group’s unusual sonic identity. Meanwhile, the core quintet (guitar, piano, bass, drums & saxophone) works with influences creatively, in a less fully notated way than the do-dectet.

Voices Beyond Divisions

Asha believes that music has an important role in bringing people together and fostering positive changes –  musicians need to be involved in the world beyond simply creating and performing music.

She certainly ‘walked the talk’ when she created her astonishing project, Voices Beyond Divisions when she was just sixteen and plans to develop this initiative further.
